Listening Process – Listening Tips

§Attention: Give complete attention to the speaker. Maintain eye contact
§Focus: Don’t let your mind wander even if you think you know what is coming next.
§Patience: Wait till the speaker finishes. Don’t interject
§Listen before you speak: Have you really understood the speaker?
§Main ideas: Understand the crux. Phrases like “The key point is..”
§Ask questions: Clarify whenever in doubt
§Visualize: Make mental picture of what speaker is saying
§Give feedback: Smile, frown, nod and laugh to show that you understand
